DECEMBER 2009

Tobi Clark, :acute

'Tis the Fresh-tive season

The Craft Victoria Fresh! judges have been at it again... Over the month of November, a dedicated team of 20 industry professionals and practitioners trawled through almost 40 craft and design graduate exhibitions across the state, selecting the most innovative works for Craft Victoria's final exhibition of the year. Join us at the Fresh! opening on Thursday 3 December to preview Victoria's emerging craft and design talent.

To coincide with the exhibition, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins and Global Art Projects present :acute an experiment in the relationship between fashion and installation by Fresh! 2008 award winner Tobi Clark. The installation is on show in the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins lobby until March 2010.

Summer break
Craft Victoria's last day of trading for 2009 is Wednesday 23 December. We will reopen on Monday 11 January 2010. Craft Almanac returns in early February. We wish all our subscribers a happy festive season with lots of handmade goodies!

Opening: Thursday 3 December, 6-8pm
To be opened by Richard Watts, RRR Smart Arts presenter

Divertissement is a joint showing of new works by practitioners Christopher Headley and Darren McGinn. Encompassing a range of mediums including ceramics, wood and installation, both artists explore issues of cultural identity and place. Headley’s practice considers our relationship to the natural environment, whilst McGinn’s investigates the potential loss of personal and communal identity as the urban sprawl extends into regional precincts.

Infused with a sense of wonder about the world and the objects through which we make sense of it, these artists approach their practice with an appreciation of the comical and the absurd.

Opening: Thursday 21 January, 6-8pm
To be opened by Grace Cochrane, curator and writer

Using techniques of sculptural assemblage and repetitive craft-based processes, Adam Cruickshank takes mass-produced objects and reworks them into one-off totems or charms. Reverse Cargo employs concepts of sympathetic magic much like the techniques of various Papua New Guinean tribes, albeit via a reversed, backward exchange.

Unlike the work of many cargo cults throughout the history of the Oceania region, which adapted highly evolved craft practices to replicate the trappings of modern technology and western lifestyle, this work inverts these processes to forcibly apply the magical to the mass-produced.

Opening: Thursday 21 January, 6-8pm
To be opened by Phip Murray, Director, West Space

Interdisciplinary group Chicks on Speed have performed with the theremin tapestry that was shown as a work-in-progress earlier this year at Craft Victoria. Some nimble fingers from the Victorian Tapestry Workshop commenced the work in the Craft Victoria gallery during the solo exhibition Viva La Craft! The tapestry was then turned into a theremin using a high-tech theremin transformer at the Theremin Institute in Moscow.
